It is happening to many if not most people from their late 40s to their late 50s. In fact, according to one top study, over 50% of people over 50 will lose their jobs. In this conversation with Dr. Steve Anderson, we talk about the challenges to sustaining careers for as long as we want to work and need to work.
The key is to surrender your expectations. Don’t look backward to the career you’ve had. Look forward toward the career you can create at this stage. It may be different from the old one, but chances are it can be more meaningful and more rewarding.
While conventional wisdom holds that we are more risk-averse as we age, I try to turn this concept around. Don’t we actually have less to lose? Isn’t now the best time of our lives to take on managed risks?
