People Managing People

Stop focusing on the resume as the benchmark document in your career search – or in your hiring process if you’re a hiring manager.

The resume is a retrospective document that describes the past. It is not necessarily an indication of what someone’s performance is going to be in the future.

This is just one of the topics David Rice and I discussed on the People Managing People podcast.

Stop worrying about gaps in your resume. Or short-tenure positions. Fit is, or should be, much more about a range of criteria. Job skill is just one. Adaptability, insight, introspection, resilience, empathy, a growth mindset, a service mindset… These are what recruiters and hiring managers should be looking for. And it’s what you as the job seeker should be prepared to promote and defend as your strengths.

Too idealistic? Well, it has to start someplace, so it might as well start with you – whether you’re a job seeker or a hiring manager. Adopt this approach consistently and you’ll find your people and you’ll find your fit.
