Jacqueline Freeman is a true avatar of career reinvention. Unapologetic about her age in the face of institutionalized ageism – especially ageism targeted at older women – her podcast hits the issue squarely and honestly.
In our conversation, we touched on some of the differences in the ways that ageism at work affects men vs. women. And while, in my view, there are some differences, overall I have found that men and women both deal with ageism at work in very similar ways. It is largely a question of identity. For those of us (men or women) who grow attached to our roles, our status, and the company culture we’ve been working within, it can be challenging to find oneself cut off from that enveloping reality.
With corporate loyalty a thing of the past, anyone who is still harboring illusions that their job is secure and that their company has their back, Jacqueline’s and my message to you is: think again! Listen to the episode to learn some of the keys to career reinvention and building resilience so that you’re prepared when the inevitable axe strikes.
