Communicate Your Value

If 250 people are applying to the same position you’re vying for (yep; that’s the statistical average), you have a better chance of getting into an Ivy League university than getting that job.

On Jason Raitz’s “Speak With People” podcast, we talk about how job candidates can do a better job of standing out and making themselves more competitive in this crazy job marketplace. This means that you have to break the habit of applying to every open position that kinda/sorta feels like you could do it (so why not apply and give it a shot?). That is a prescription for frustration.

Instead, look inside. Begin to compile an updated value proposition for how you want to up-level the work that you have done, and take it to a new level. Even if that means that you want to do the same kind of work or role that you’ve done in the past, you still want to find a new way to frame it.

Update your mission to perhaps serve new goals. Or drill down to a level of depth or specificity that you never dared consider before.
